FORT MORGAN Ala. Occasionally, here in Baldwin County, drugs wash ashore from unknown origins, though most is either intentionally tossed from boats or is otherwise accidentally dropped into the water.
Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Danny Steelman said that on Thursday, swimmers west of the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge on the Fort Morgan peninsula saw something bobbing in the water and pulled it onshore. The swimmers curiously began inspecting the bundle and once they realized that it contained drugs, called 911.
“It was wrapped in black plastic, and they did tear into the black plastic, but they didn’t open any of the individual bundles,” added Steelman.
Steelman said that several law enforcement officers arrived in the area and found 50 packages of illegal narcotics which after testing was determined to be cocaine.
Capt. Danny Steelman said that the 110 pounds of drugs has a street value of about $1.5 million,”.
Several local and federal law enforcement agents including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are now investigating.
Marijuana and Cocaine have washed up along the Eastern Shores, Gulf Shores, and other areas of Baldwin County throughout the years.
Bundles of Cocaine washed ashore on the West Beach of Gulf Shores about four years ago police said. The drugs, which weighed over seventy-seven pounds were received by police
77 pounds of cocaine washed ashore along the West Beach in Gulf Shores and for several days thereafter, more bundles were found floating into shore as well.
Steelman said that could happen again in this situation. “It is not uncommon for us to get a bundle and a few days later get more bundles. Sometimes it is in a kilo size, and sometimes larger bundles.”
At this time, it hasn’t been determined how the drugs got into the water, but it is an active investigation Steelman said.
