Fairhope Man Guilty of $834,000 Embezzlement

MOBILE, Ala. A Fairhope man previously arrested in the embezzlement of more than $800,000 from his employer has now plead guilty to the charge.
According to court documents, Gregory Andersen pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to theft of government money, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. According to his written plea agreement, he worked as the office manager for a soil testing company in Robertsdale from 2020 until the business discovered financial discrepancies in 2023.
Andersen admitted in federal court Tuesday that he also lied about having an inoperable brain tumor when questioned about the missing money.
According to law enforcement, they were notified of the internal thefts and while investigating also found that Andersen had been receiving disability benefits without reporting his income. Investigators determined that the Social Security Administration overpaid him $61,609 from December 2020 and September 2023.
Andersen, during the investigation, took responsibility for the crimes that he committed and was able to bypasses a grand jury and an indictment.
Estimates put the thefts at over $834,187.00.
Andersen admitted that he created a fake email for himself posing as a tax attorney and a fake email for his boss. He used those to transfer money from the business to himself from April 2022 to October 2023. According to Andersen’s written plea agreement, he arranged for company funds to be transferred to a bank account he controlled and an American Express card.
Court records show frequent visits to casinos in Mississippi, as well as Wind Creek Casino in Atmore. They also document regular credit card purchases at restaurants, pharmacies, gas stations, grocery stores and a host of other businesses.
While talking with law enforcement he admitted that his gambling problem was part of the reason for the thefts.
Andersen is scheduled to be sentenced on December 1, 2026.
