Why Do Firefighters Get Paid to Sleep?

While it is true that firefighters everywhere do get paid to sleep, it’s because of one simple reason.
Firefighters are always on duty while working their shift which in itself is a bit unusual.
Many firefighters nationwide have for years worked what’s known as the 24/48 A/B or A/B/C shift rotation.
In this work format, firefighters work for twenty-four hours straight and then have the next two days off.
Let’s say that the firefighter reports for duty at 0700, he or she will live at the firehouse, answering emergency calls for twenty hours straight without going home.
During those hours, at any given time, an emergency call might send the firefighter to a medical emergency, structure fire, gunshot victim incident, car wreck where people are injured, and almost every imaginable type of emergency call that one can think of.
Firefighters, unlike most working people, don’t clock out when they head to lunch or dinner either because they’re always on duty and must respond to the call whether they’re eating or sleeping.
There are also alternatives to the A/B shift being tried in some firehouses that are designed to give firefighters more time off to be home with family.
One of those is the 48/72 combo where the firefighter stays on duty at the firehouse for forty-eight hours straight, answering calls night and day with or without sleep, but then at the end of that very long two-day stretch, they’re off for three days.
Several fire departments recently tried the 12 on/12 off schedule, but it was reported that it actually disrupted station and family life and caused manpower shortages.
Another group of firefighters are also often sleeping at the firehouses.
Volunteer firefighters are also part of many fire stations and in some areas, are also subject to staffing the firehouse during the overnight or weekend hours and spending 8, 12, or even 24 hours on shift and
living the same firefighter life.
So, yes, firefighters, eat, sleep, shower, and, live together and are always there, ready and able to answer every emergency call regardless of the time of day.
