DAPHNE, Ala. Daphne police received numerous calls about door-to-door salesmen working for Vivint Smart Home Security who would not take no for an answer. Some of those did leave while others were more aggressive.
Daphne Police Chief Brian Gulsby said officers were sent to the area and eventually issued citations to at least four of the salespersons.
“One lady said that the salesperson was just all of a sudden there in her driveway as she was getting out of her car and actually followed her into her garage,” said Gulsby.
The police chief said that there is a city ordinance against this sales practice and that fines can be as much as $500.
Gulsby noted people reaching out for religious purposes is an exception to the ordinance because that is protected by the First Amendment. He also says they’re not going after kids who are trying to earn a buck and knock on your door to see if they can cut your grass.
“We’re not looking to cite, you know, middle school, high school, or even college kids that are trying to make some cash and are local,” said Gulsby.
The Federal Trade Commission has reported that Vivint Smart Home Security has used deceptive business practices.
Residential solicitation is prohibited by city ordinance, and we have cited one of the sales staff after providing multiple warnings. If you are contacted by any door-to-door salesperson, please call 251-620-0911.
