Assaults on medical staff have been on the rise for more than a decade and this week two healthcare employees at the Mobile Infirmary became victims of this rise in violence.
The Mobile Police were called to the hospital when 36-year-old Charles Duke tried to leave the hospital when he was stopped by medical staff. That’s when he threw an object at the workers and then spit on them.
Police said that the homeless man had been brought to the hospital earlier for undisclosed reasons.
Duke was arrested for the assault and was booked in the Mobile County Metro Jail.
In many situations, assaulting a healthcare worker in Alabama would be classified as a felony.
Tracie Barnes, a veteran of the healthcare industry for more than thirty years started as an emergency room nurse in Cincinnati Ohio where she experienced verbal and physical abuse and a serious assault where a patient punched her and slammed her against a wall.
Barnes, now a Nurse Practitioner says that she has her own practice and healthcare violence is not tolerated.
According to jail records, Duke spent most of last year locked up in Metro Jail. He just got out after serving a sentence for resisting arrest.
His bond hearing is scheduled for March 21.
