One Day, Five Accidents, Three Cities, One Road

What might sound like the making of a movie about car crashes, emergency vehicles rushing this way or that, and commuter traffic congestion on another highway, is a whole lot more like the real-life story of people living, working, or traveling along State Highway 181 on any given weekday.

Friday morning was for most who travel along that corridor daily, just another typical day with bumper-to-bumper traffic inching west down County Road 64 and eventually turning north or south onto State Highway 181 to hopefully get to their destination on time.
But an all too familiar sight awaited them as they inched toward that intersection.

State troopers, a couple of dented vehicles, and another motor vehicle crash that would no doubt at the very least slow down their commute and, at worst, cause them to be late to work or an appointment once again.

And to ensure that the lather would probably be the result of this day’s journey for these drivers, a second accident just minutes apart from the first one near the same location added to the slowdown.

But, if the day’s commuting headaches ended there with maybe a few aspirins or some extra caffeine most drivers would put it behind them and move on.

But those would not be the only accidents to occur on that stretch of road, on that day.

Accidents on State Highway 181 would leave their marks in Spanish Fort, Daphne, and Fairhope before the end of the day.
Several of those wrecks injured people, wrecked vehicles that had to be hauled off by wreckers, and slowed traffic not in one city but in three.

Multiple fire departments and ambulances rushed to make sure that no one involved was injured. Police from four agencies including the state troopers were also dispatched to each wreck to control traffic and investigate the cause of each traffic collision.

State Highway 181 and its feeder roads, businesses along that stretch, and the I-10 Interstate all contribute to the traffic, congestion, and accidents in that area.
Drivers regularly run red lights, barrel through intersections, tailgate, and speed causing accidents at many of the same locations such as Eastern Blvd., County Road 64, State Highway 104, and all points in between almost daily.

This one road can help us and hurt us and it’s even been known to be deadly.

One day, five accidents, three cities, one road.
