LOXLEY, Ala. A weekend standoff in Loxley between police and a man who held a home healthcare employee hostage at gunpoint played out like a scene from a movie.
The unnamed worker was able to eventually break free and called 911.
Loxley police initially responded to the home on Hillard Jenkins Road and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office SWAT was called in after the suspect barricaded himself inside the home.
Fifty-six-year-old Lavann Callier held the home health nurse against her will and she tried to get away from him. At that time, he produced a twenty-two rifle and tried to command her and took her phone according to Sgt. Zach Kuiken with Loxley Police. He refused to allow her to leave.
“We believe that he was intoxicated,” said Kuiken. “He lived there with his grandmother and made some advances towards the home health nurse, and it went downhill from there.
That’s when police said the victim made a choice to fight and was able to free herself, escape the home, and call police from a neighbor’s house. When Loxley learned the suspect had barricaded himself, along with his 99-year-old grandmother inside the home and police then called in the Baldwin County SWAT for assistance.
It was a tense situation for all involved that ended with just minor injuries to Callier. Investigators said the victim responded bravely and appropriately to the threat.
Callier now faces charges of robbery and resisting arrest.
Callier’s bond has been set at a total of $101,000. He has until October 21, 2025, to request a preliminary hearing
