MOBILE, AL. A family in Mobile still cannot believe what happened early Saturday morning as they slept.
The homeowner, Mike Lankford, said that he and his family are struggling after a juvenile driver fled police during a traffic stop at Azalea Road and Airport Boulevard and ended in a crash just a mile and a half away outside Lankford’s home.
It was here that the juvenile lost control of the vehicle and slammed into Lankford’s home.
The collision knocked bricks off the home and part of the house off its foundation.
Lankford says they’re lucky no one was hurt. Their bedrooms are on the other side of the home.
The house is currently uninhabitable due to damage to at least one side and compromised water and gas connections.
While the police did apprehend the driver, this family of three is essentially homeless and in a state of limbo while they try to sort things out.
Since the wreck, the family has been staying at hotels, which is very costly.
Lankford said they’ve been dealing with the insurance companies but that it’s slow-going.
Police say the driver was taken to Strickland Youth Center, but since the suspect is a juvenile, no name or age has been released. Police say the driver was travelling at a high rate of speed before crashing in front of the home that sits at the end of Michael Boulevard.
