FAIRHOPE Ala. Talks of a new hotel in downtown Fairhope have been floating around for more than a year, and it hasn’t gone away despite numerous hurdles that it has had to face.
The building that has been talked about for the hotel project is the former Fairhope Hardware Sore on Fairhope Avenue near Section Street.
Some of the delays have been parking concerns, restrictions on the number of floors, and even the design.
But now, Mayor Sullivan said recently that the owners of the building that they bought at auction have hired a new architect to come up with a new plan that will the specifications and requirements of the city.
This design will still include a hotel but some of the inclusions from the first design will be scaled back due to certain limitations.
Once these restrictions have been met by the new designs and the city’s planning department approves them, the project should take shape soon thereafter.
Mayor Sullivan has stated that a demolition permit has already been issued to tear down the old building.
Right now the building is an eyesore and poses safety concerns as it is beginning to crumble and either needs extensive repairs to save the building or needs to come down.
