Over 100 Candidates Participate in Birmingham Police Department Recruitment Efforts

The Birmingham Police Department has seen more than 100 people attend the physical agility and abilities screenings required to qualify for the Birmingham Police Academy, according to Mayor Randall Woodfin.
“We have seen a growing number of people interested in serving our city through a career in law enforcement. I am encouraged that a new generation is answering the call to serve and protect in the Birmingham Police Department,” Mayor Woodfin said in a statement. “I want to thank the Birmingham City Council for partnering and approving our $16 million Birmingham Police Recruitment and Retention program in October. I encourage people interested in applying to the academy to attend the physical agility and abilities screening this Saturday.”
In total, BPD has seen 111 candidates participate in one of their three physical screenings since Nov. 16, 2024. Of these candidates, 52 passed the screening and advanced to the next stage, undergoing polygraph, psychological and medical evaluations.
In addition to the upcoming class beginning in March, 28 recruits began the academy in November.
The final screening to qualify for the next Birmingham Police Academy class is this Saturday at 8 a.m. the screening will take place at 401 6th Ave. South.

10 new officers began their careers with BPD in January, and nine veteran officers are in the process of transferring to the department from other law enforcement agencies.
In October, Mayor Woodfin and BPD received council approval for a police recruitment and retention program. The approved program increases bonuses to $10,000 for recruits and establishes $2,500 quarterly bonuses for officers who have been with the department for over two years. The program also funds a take-home-vehicle initiative for officers, part-time reserve officers and pre-academy hiring. The amended Fiscal Year 2025 operating budget funds a 3% cost of living adjustment for all city employees.
