The Orange Beach Police have a message for you, “Scam Alert”.
The Orange Beach Police Department says that a person known to them by the name of Charles Nevett, a career criminal according to police, is back at work trying to scam others.
In November by Orange Beach Police for allegedly scamming a 70-year-old woman out of $9,500 and police say they’ve received a call from a woman outside their jurisdiction — about Nevett approaching her.
“She had received a call from Mr. Nevett discussing a possible business proposition and she had a friend in our area who had seen our previous Facebook post about his previous arrest. And they got to talking and it concerned her — so she phoned us to let us know what had happened,” explained Lt. Trent Johnson, Orange Beach Police.
Nevett was released from Baldwin County Jail on December 2nd — only to be booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail the following day on two warrants from 2016. He was able to bond out on Mobile December 10th, but police say that he’s up to his old tricks again.
Essentially he makes contacts with women, offering a once in a lifetime chance to make money by entering business arrangements that promise fast returns on their investments.
“He’ll make contact with people usually through some type of app — usually a business deal — sometimes it’s a dating app — we call those the romance scams. And this is just a good segue if I may — into if it seems to good to be true — whether it’s a business deal or a romance scam — it probably is and people should beware. But if you don’t know this person and you’ve never met this person face to face and you don’t know someone who has met this person face to face — when they start asking for money — that’s when it’s time to cut if off,” said Lt. Johnson.
Johnson says they know of at least two other cases in the Orange Beach area involving Nevett — but the alleged victims did not want to press charges.
“I think there is a lot of shame associated with it — oh — I got had type of thing. But there’s really no shame. It happens to everybody — every walk of life. And if it does happen — let us try to work the case — and let us try to prosecute it,” said Lt. Johnson.
If you’ve been contacted or know someone who has been contacted by Nevett — and the circumstances seem “suspicious” — you’re urged to contact your local police department.
