November Snow in Alabama? Wishful Thinking!
HUNTSVILLE Ala.
Don’t pull out the snowplows, but a snowflake sighting *could* be possible next week in parts of north Alabama.
Veteran meteorologist Jason Simpson, from Birmingham’s WVTM 13, was brave enough to mention the possibility in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday:
Simpson said the bigger story will be the possibility of much colder air coming to Alabama about a week from now.
The National Weather Service only forecasts seven days into the future, and the possible cold spell is just outside their forecast range. However, meteorologists did mention the possibility in Thursday’s forecast discussion, saying: “Looks like some cold weather is coming as well, although the timing and magnitude of said cold is still to be determined.”
According to the weather service, November snow in Alabama is very, very rare but not unheard of:
* The earliest snowfall on record in Huntsville was 4 inches on Nov. 2, 1966.
* Anniston also got 0.8 inch on Nov. 2, 1966.
* Muscle Shoals got 3.3 inches on Nov. 24, 1938.
* Birmingham had 1.4 inches of snow on Nov. 24, 1950.
* Montgomery and Tuscaloosa both have had trace amounts of snow in November: Montgomery in 2018 and Tuscaloosa in 2011.
