Mobile Co. Sheriff Wants Permitless Law Changed
MOBILE, Ala.
Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch is once more voicing his opinion about the permitless carry law that went into effect almost two years ago.
Prior to the law being passed, he objected saying that it would be of no value to law enforcement.
Now, he’s speaking up again saying that teenagers should be required to obtain a concealed carry permit which would help to cut down on crime and track those that might be committing crimes with guns.
His main concern seems to be teenagers being able to carry firearms unchecked which may be leading to an increase in gun violence in the port city.
According to AL.com, he says he wants people under the age of 21 to be required to buy a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
He told AL.com that requiring young people to buy a permit would allow law enforcement to seize firearms before they’re used violently.
Burch said that “in some cases, it has tied our hands with some of the tools that we would typically use and I don’t want to go into a lot of detail, but on our no-pistol-permit arrests, we could probably cite several dozen cases just this year that murders have been solved, drive-by shootings have been solved.”
The permitless carry law went into effect on January 1st, 2023.
