Massive Mutual-Aid Response in Stapleton After Brush Fire Sparks Propane Gas Tank Explosion

STAPLETON, Ala. From a distance, it looked like there was a house or commercial business on fire with heavy dark black smoke rolling skywards.
And it was a substantial fire burning in the Stapleton area that started as a brush fire that spread to a propane gas tank causing a massive explosion on Sunday, July 19, 2026.
According to Spanish Fort Police Chief John Barber, one of his officers spotted the brush fire and immediately called it in, helping bring a large emergency response to the area while Stapleton Volunteer FD was the primary response team.
Firefighters from Stapleton Volunteer Fire Department, Loxley Volunteer Fire Department, Spanish Fort Fire Department, Whitehouse Fork Volunteer Fire Department and Silverhill Volunteer Fire Department all responded to battle the fire.
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and an ambulance from Medstar also responded to the scene.
The Stapleton Fire Department reported that no one was injured but there was a heavy patch of scorched land, burned ground where the explosion occurred and some wooded areas showed signs of the fire.
The fire department thanked all of the mutual-aid responders and others who stopped to help.
At this time, the cause of the fire has not been determined.
