MOBILE, AL. A new arena is already being built in Mobile just off I-1o and now, there’ll be a new minor league hockey team moving into it.
For the past year or more, there have been some sudden hints that a hockey team might be coming back to town, and on Wednesday, it became official.
Port City once enjoyed a local minor league franchise for several years, but The Mystics moved, and now hockey will once again add some excitement to the entire metro area.
While some have doubts about the new team because of Mobile’s history with hockey, others are ready for the face-off and excited about what’s happening in the city.
We have a lot of sports fans and visitors that’s already excited about a new team, and I think it’s going to bring more people back to the downtown area said Brock Walters.
“I know that maybe it didn’t get the broad support that they needed at that time, but I think a lot has changed in Mobile since then,” David Rasp, Hero’s Sports Bar owner, said. “We’ve got a lot of people who now live in Mobile who weren’t living in Mobile 22 years ago. I do think there’s an opportunity. I think hockey can work in southern markets if it’s done correctly.”
“I think this time it’ll stick. I think there’s a lot more support,” Hays said.
The team’s owner is taking suggestions from locals on puck-tacular team name ideas. Locals already have a few ideas for the team.
“Mobile loves their moon pies, what about Mobile Moon Pucks? Could work!” Hays said.
Several women who work downtown said they’re excited to see new life being breathed into the city.
“I think the color should be Mardi Gras scheme. Something involved the city and its culture. Some green, purple, gold. It’d be awesome,” Mixon said.
