At this time, Alabama’s Gulf Coast residents look to be in the clear from Hurricane Rafael’s wrath as most storm prediction models are keeping it further westward toward Louisianna.
However, those living along the coastal areas of Alabama should prepare for potential high surf, strong winds, and minor coastal flooding as Hurricane Rafael enters the Gulf and begins making its way toward Louisiana.
Although a direct hit on Alabama isn’t expected, Alabama could benefit from periods of rain, possibly heavy at times.
According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, Rafael strengthened to a Category 3 as it reached Cuba,, and should only have minor impacts on Gulf waters anticipated by the weekend. Alabama’s coastline could experience rough surfs, dangerous rip currents, and elevated tides, posing risks for beachgoers and boaters.
Wind gusts may also pick up in coastal areas, potentially affecting outdoor events and travel.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, avoid swimming or boating in rough waters, and monitor updates closely. Officials urge caution for anyone traveling along coastal highways, as the storm’s impact could cause brief flooding or delays.
At this time, the storm’s path could still shift further west or turn eastward closer to Alabama.
