WASHINGTON COUNTY, AL. A head-on collision has killed a 17-year-old Washington County High School student, according to ALEA.
The Tuesday morning collision occurred along Highway 17 near Baxter Godwin Road when the vehicle driven by the teenager and an 18-wheeler traveling south collided head-on.
Multiple emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene including several ambulances, said the sheriff’s office.
“The vehicle she was driving remained on the highway. The 18-wheeler left the roadway and went into a ditch,” said Deputy Tim Landrum with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Landrum was the first official on scene and said bystanders had already helped the truck driver out of the cab when he arrived.
“When I got here, some bystanders had gotten the driver of the truck and was helping him get to the road where we were assisting with first aid and getting him medical treatment,” said Landrum.
Law enforcement has confirmed that the girl died on the scene. Her pickup truck was crushed into three pieces.
“(Her truck) was demolished. Forty-one years of law enforcement — that’s the worst vehicle I’ve ever seen. You could not even describe if it was a truck or a car. It was unrecognizable,” said Landrum.
Landrum said the victim’s father came to the scene to say goodbye to his daughter.
“It’s a tragic accident that we never know in the morning when we say goodbye to our children what the day holds,” said Landrum.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is handling the investigation and working to determine who was at fault.
The name of the deceased teenager has not been released.
