MOBILE, Ala. The person responsible for setting fire at the Greer’s Downtown Market confessed in federal court, and he was given the minimum sentence in federal court on Monday.
Chief U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Beaverstock imposed the sentence, which prosecutors recommended, and ordered Timothy David Jones to reimburse the Greer store for the $24,901 in damages that he caused.
The 41-year-old Mobile man pleaded guilty in April to malicious destruction by fire that his client was suffering from drug-induced delusions at the time and has battled addiction for two decades. He said Jones believed he was the king of Mobile but had been dethroned by a bad man and that the only way to get his crown back was to burn the city down.
According to court records, Jones grabbed a pack of lighters in February last year and then used lighter fluid to set a roll of paper towels on fire inside the store on Government Street. The blaze damaged several items in the store, fixtures, and part of the ceiling.
Jones has three previous criminal convictions and a pending arson charge in Pensacola.
He also has a pending arson charge in state court related to the Greer’s fire, although his attorney said he expects that to be dismissed now that his client has been sentenced in federal court.
