BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
Another person has officially stepped up to become the state’s next Governor.
Former Alabama Senator Doug Jones made it official Friday night in Birmingham where he launched his campaign for governor of Alabama.
The well-known Jones, who is a Democrat, kicked off his campaign with performances by Grammy winning country stars Jason Isbell and DJ Slim Robb.
He said that his chose this day to announce his candidacy because it was the anniversary of his defeat of former Republican Alabama Supreme Court Judge Roy Moore in 20-17.
“It is no accident we are here on December 12th,” he said to the crowd, “eight years ago to the day when Alabama proved it could defy simplified labels of red and blue. It could defy folks who would pit us against each other and the us-versus-them mentality, that it could defy political pundits who never gave this son of a Fairfield, Alabama steel worker and a stay-home mom, who I miss, never gave us a snowball’s chance in hell of winning a statewide political campaign. But you gave me the great, great honor of serving as a United States Senator.”
Jones served two years in the U.S. Senate before losing to Tommy Tuberville in 20-20.
Before serving in the U.S. Senate, Jones had a long history as an attorney.
