MOBILE, Ala.
A former Mobile police officer has turned himself in after learning of an outstanding arrest charging him with homicide by vehicle involving a fatal motorcycle wreck that occurred previously in July while on duty and driving a city police vehicle.
Roy Adams Jr., 45, of Theodore, surrendered and was booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail today and released on a $10,000 bond.
According to investigators, Adams ran a red light at Old Shell Road and Mobile Infirmary Boulevard in midtown Mobile, causing a crash that killed 67-year-old motorcyclist Sumner “Kahuna” Howard, a U.S. Air Force veteran. Adam was responding to an emergency call but may not have had his emergency lights and siren on when he entered the intersection.
Had this or any officer been responding with lights and sirens and cautiously entered the intersection and was involved in an accident, it may not have been elevated to a criminal investigation.
Questions have been raised about Adams’ driving record which showed that he has been involved in four wrecks while on duty and has received numerous speeding tickets while off-duty and driving his own personal vehicle.
Adams voluntarily resigned three weeks ago according to Officer Roderick Miles, a police spokesman.
After the wreck, an investigation was conducted and handed over to the Mobile District Attorney’s Office and a Mobile County Grand Jury indicted former Adams for disregarding the rules of the road and caused the death of Sumner Howard.”
