A devasting fire late Saturday evening engulfed the First Presbyterian Church of Atmore.
The church which is located on East Horner Street was in flames when the fire department arrived at the scene at around 11 p.m.
The Atmore Fire Chief Ronald Peebles said that he was driving down the street when he smelled smoke and saw the church on fire. He immediately notified the dispatcher to send help.
Witnesses say they saw lightning strikes multiple times in the area during the storm. According to fire officials, that same lightning could’ve struck the church, causing the fire but at this time, the cause of the fire has not been determined.
The fire department reported that much of the church was destroyed as church members watched from nearby.
“This church is the center of our lives,” church elder Larry Houck said. “Church, it’s our community center. This belongs to our church family, and it’s been here over 100 years.”
“It’s been destroyed one time. A big oak tree fell through it after a storm and it was rebuilt, but it keeps flourishing, so we’ll rebuild it this time,” he added.
About two dozen fire apparatuses from Florida and Alabama responded to the fire according to the fire chief.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
