A fire on the roof of a Perdido Key condominium brought several fire departments to the scene including the Orange Beach Alabama fire department.
Fire officials said that the fire started around 1 a.m. at the Sea Spray East condos.
When firefighters arrived, flames were showing from the rooftop and it was important to evacuate the building, said Fire Chief Dan Brask.
Firefighters climbed 10 flights of stairs with 100 pounds of equipment to fight the rooftop fire which the chief said was very strenuous and sometimes difficult to extinguish.
It requires us to be able to go from firefighting on a level surface to then going on a vertical firefighting process, which then requires us to take all of our equipment, all of our personnel, and relocate them to various floors,” Brask said.
The chief says they were able to contain this fire within the first 30-40 minutes.
The cause of the fire was workers on the roof who were re-sealing the roof, and they were using propane burners to heat the material to manipulate it for sealing purposes and water penetration and it caught fire to part of the roof.
The building manager said that four units did receive some fire and water damage, with others just getting some water damage.
The fire department reported that no one was injured.
