The tragic deaths of three people on area railroad tracks have now been ruled accidental.
The people were deemed to be homeless and were possibly sleeping near the tracks when were hit.
The people were hit at Cherokee and Rickarby Streets on Tuesday.
Through the investigation and speaking with Port of Mobile officials, the Mobile Police Department has concluded there are no criminal findings to the incident that occurred on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
The locomotive involved was being operated by the Port of Mobile.
Evidence revealed the train’s horn was sounded prior to impact shortly after 5 p.m., but the three victims were unable to clear the track.
The authority said the conductor never saw the men sleeping on the tracks and didn’t know he hit them and continued to his destination.
Later that evening, a second conductor got on board, traveling in the opposite direction, back towards Cherokee Street and that’s when the conductor spotted the bodies at around 11:40 p.m. and he called the police.
Emergency responders including the Mobile Fire-Rescue and police arrived within minutes of the 911 call.
Officers arrived on scene at approximately 11:40 p.m. and discovered the three male victims deceased.
The names of the victims will be released once next of kin has been notified.
