The Baldwin County 911 communications center received a call about a suicide threat or attempt on Wednesday evening at around 5:15 p.m.
from an unusual location.
The caller reported that someone at the Daphne Bounds Family YMCA located on Whispering Pines Road had threatened to or was attempting to, take their life.
The Daphne police and fire departments along with an ambulance from Medstar responded to the location.
Several of the customers left the facility during this time but we have not been told if the YMCA was completely evacuated.
We’ve asked the police department for further clarification.
Daphne police and fire departments answer suicide threat calls regularly and patients are usually evaluated and transported to an area hospital for treatment.
49,300 suicide deaths were reported in 2023, and those numbers are climbing.
There are many factors for the increase including a rise in depression and drug use according to the National Institute for Mental Health.
