Chamber Announces $22.4 Million Metal Recycling Plant Coming to Mobile County

MOBILE, AL. An announcement from the Mobile Chamber of Commerce states that another new business is moving into the neighborhood and bringing with it a $22.4 million metal recycling plant.
Jefferson Shredding and Recycling, LLC, is planning a co-location project at Outokumpu’s facility in Calvert and is expected to create 15 new jobs in Mobile County.
Outokumpu reportedly uses 95 percent recycled materials to produce fully recyclable stainless steel.
The main part of the project involves installing and operating a metal shredder to reduce large scrap metal pieces into smaller pieces that can then be melted and recycled.
In the release they stated that an estimated 9,000 tons of scrap metal will be recycled each month, resulting in nearly 108,000 tons recycled each year, according to officials.
“Jefferson Shredding and Recycling is proud to partner with Outokumpu on a project that strengthens the circular economy and supports the long-term future of metal manufacturing in our region,” said Paul Dreher Sr. of Jefferson Shredding and Recycling, LLC.
“By processing and recycling scrap metal locally, we’re creating a more efficient and sustainable supply chain while investing in an industry that provides high-quality jobs and drives economic growth across southwest Alabama.”
The investment is expected to create high-paying jobs and expand recycling and materials recovery efforts.
Jefferson Shredding and Recycling representatives said they plan to break ground on the project in June and start operations in August 2027.
