BALDWIN COUNTY Ala.
Almost a dozen brush fires have kept firefighters busy once again and as we enter a week with little rain forecasted.
Firefighters in many areas of Mobile and Baldwin Counties have seen mainly small brush fires that have been quickly extinguished but there have also been several larger fires burning several acres or more.
One such fire happened on Thursday just before noon in the area of Eagle Lane near Robertsdale.
Flames were reported to be coming from deep within a wooded area.
At least three fire departments were dispatched to the area and had to call in the Alabama Forestry Department for assistance.
Because of the location of the fire, it was hard to extinguish and was spreading.
Firefighters in Fairhope were called in on Wednesday and Thursday to stand by at a prescribed fire in the Fly Creek Nature Preserve area and also responded to several small brush fires at US 98 @ Veterans Drive.
Over the past several decades, wildfire activity, damages attributed to wildfires, and costs of managing wildfires have increased substantially in the United States.
Over 68,000 fires burned approximately 7.6 million acres in the United States in 2024.
The annual area burned in fires increased by nearly 60 percent from 1990 to 2024.
