Baldwin County Sheriff’s Tasers Now Shoot Ten Probes

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office has become the latest Gulf Coast law enforcement agency to upgrade their Taser weapon to the new “Taser 10”.

The Taser is a handheld weapon that uses electricity to temporarily incapacitate a person. It fires two small darts connected to the main unit by wires that deliver a shock, disrupting voluntary muscle control and causing pain. Tasers are often used by law enforcement as a non-lethal alternative to firearms in situations involving violent or aggressive individuals.

The first Taser was introduced to law enforcement in 1974.

Over the years, Taser, now owned by the Axon Corporation, has upgraded the weapon to allow it to shoot more than one set of darts without changing the cartridge.

The latest model, called Taser 10, allows for 10 darts to be fired from one cartridge without having to reload the weapon and has a maximum range of 45 feet while the previous tasers could only shoot probes up to 25 feet. A more visible green laser improves aim during daytime use. There is also an audible and visual warning alert where a bright pulsing light and loud sound take place when the taser Warning Alert is initiated before the taser is fired.

The sheriff’s office said that the new Tasers enhance officer safety and help to de-escalate situations in a less-lethal way.

Captain Daniel Steelman says every deputy is receiving hands-on training for the Taser 10s. Captain Steelman says it’s a necessary upgrade.

Funding for the Tasers comes directly from the Baldwin County Commission. Captain Steelman said that eventually all Tasers will be upgraded in the department with Taser 10.

Other area departments that carry the new weapons include the Spanish Fort Police, the Mobile Police Department, and the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.

Some other area law enforcement agencies are also considering upgrading their current Taser, however, for some, it’s cost-prohibitive currently.
