BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. Just days after Baldwin County experienced two suicides within hours of each other, police, firefighters and EMS have responded to at least three more threats or attempts of suicide.
One person intentionally overdosed on pills, another threatened to use a firearm.
Police say that calls for help are increasing but more alarming is the fact that many people are doing more than just threatening to end their lives, they’re following through with the act.
The most recent was at an apartment complex on County Road 64. Law enforcement said that the person was distraught and had attempted to end their life.
Local firefighters and EMS were dispatched to the scene. It is not known if the person survived.
Suicide remains a major public health crisis in the U.S., with rates historically high and certain groups, especially young people and older men continuing to face elevated risks.
According to the CDC, suicide caused 48,824 deaths in 2024, the 11th leading cause of death overall.
The age‑adjusted death rate was 13.7 per 100,000 people, down slightly from the 2022 peak of 14.2 but still well above early‑2000s levels.
In 2024, 14.3 million adults seriously considered suicide, 4.6 million planned an attempt, and 2.2 million attempted.
While Baldwin County has some mental health services, many medical professionals believe that there’s not enough.
In 2024, Alabama’s age‑adjusted suicide rate was 15.99 per 100,000 (837 deaths).
Fairhope experienced a rash of public suicides during the past three years including the most recent one being in the front of Thomas Hospital where a man fatally shot himself.
Another was found on a bench near the Fairhope pier and yet another, was found in the beach area north of the Fairhope Municipal Pier (near North Beach Park) at the bottom of the stairs. The death was ruled a suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Almost 1000 people die annually in Alabama by suicide according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.
