EUFALA, Ala. Police call it a disturbing crime in this city of 12,000 in southeastern Alabama near the Georgia line.
A murder of a teen who was found dismembered and burned has everyone living in the small community shocked and bewildered.
But the Eufaula Police Department has made an arrest in the murder and hope that it will help to ease the pain and the citizen’s concerns for their own safety.
Josiah Isaiah McKinney, 19, of Eufaula, is charged with murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence.
The family of Markavious Rumph, Jr., 18, found his body after organizing a community search. Rump was reported missing on May 7, and his body was recovered on May 11 on White Oak Church Road.
Several law enforcement agencies have worked on the murder case though much of the information remains private for the integrity of the case police said.
“On occasion, the need for information by the public is outweighed by the integrity of the investigation,” said Chief Danny Christ. “Detectives were in contact with the parents on day one of Rumph Jr. being reported missing to build timelines and produce contacts to trace his last known location.”
Detectives determined Rumph was last seen getting into a black Nissan at the Beeline #3 Gas Station on May 6.
“Significant evidence was recovered on day two that led to the arrest of McKinney after the positive identification of the remains were made,” Christ added.
We still have a way to go on this case to ensure that we haven’t missed anything and investigators are continuing to conduct interviews.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Eufaula PD at 334-687-1200.
