Alabama Corrections Employee Arrested for Leading Police on a Pursuit

He wore a uniform and a badge and took an oath to protect and serve but Millbrook police say an employee with the Alabama Department of Corrections has been arrested after speeding and trying to evade officers.

An officer running radar on Friday, at about 1:50PM spotted a vehicle doing 83 MPH in a 45 MPH zone in the 2600 block of Main Street. This was during the time that the state faced a winter weather threat.

The officer tried to stop the driver, but the driver sped up and passed other vehicles until they encountered traffic, which forced the driver to slow down and eventually come to an abrupt stop in the 4100 block of Main Street.

Police Chief Johnson said the driver, 21-year-old Nehemiah J. Newsome of Montgomery, was arrested.
He is charged with felony attempting to elude.
He is being held in the Elmore County Jail.

“It’s my understanding that the alleged offender in this case is employed by the Alabama Department of Corrections, advising our officers after being stopped that he was merely trying to make it to work at the time of the traffic stop, which resulted in his arrest,” Johnson said.

Johnson said that Alabama Department of Corrections officials were notified, and they responded to the scene to assist Millbrook police with their investigation.
