MARSHALL COUNTY, Ala. A joint operation between numerous north Alabama law enforcement agencies and Immigration and Customs Enforcement has netted more than 180 arrests.
Law enforcement made the arrests across Marshall, Franklin, Lawrence and Colbert counties during a five-day operation according to Marshall County Sheriff Phil Sims.
The operation sought people with criminal histories involving violent offenses, domestic violence, sexual offenses, DUI convictions and people who had previously been deported from the United States.
Many were hiding in plain sight, continuing their criminal life and law enforcement directed much of their focus on these people.
In Marshall County, Sims said his deputies worked alongside ICE agents. He said a portion of the arrests directly impact Marshall County.
In a statement, Sims said, “The results of this operation highlight the importance of cooperation between local and federal law enforcement agencies. When individuals with serious criminal histories, including those who have repeatedly been deported and unlawfully returned to this country, are found living in our communities, we have a responsibility to take appropriate action.”
“What concerns me most is the criminal history of some of the individuals apprehended during this operation. These are not simply immigration violations. We are talking about individuals reportedly involved in serious criminal offenses, including crimes of violence and offenses that place innocent citizens and families at risk.
“I want to make something very clear. This operation was not about someone’s race, ethnicity, or nationality. It was about enforcing the law, identifying individuals who may pose a threat to public safety, and ensuring accountability through the legal process.”
In Alabama, more than six dozen local and state law enforcement agencies including sheriff’s offices, police departments, and the Alabama Department of Corrections—have partnered with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) through federal 287(g) agreements.
