Gulf Shores Boat Launch Will Remain

GULF SHORES, Ala. While area residents voiced their concerns about the possible destruction of an area boat launch, others took to social media expressing displeasure with the possibility of losing their favorite spot to launch their boat and meet up with other anglers.

Now, it appears that city leaders have reconsidered after hearing the concerns of citizens.
The Gulf Shores City Council approved an extension of a lease agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) concerning the Canal Park boat launch located under the Highway 59 bridge in Waterway Village.

There were pros and cons for the reason to remove the boat launch but in the end, it’ll be hanging around for quite a while longer.

The council previously considered removing the launch due to safety concerns and a new plan to develop the area. However, after hearing from concerned residents, the council amended the agreement.

Councilman Phillip Harris abstained from the vote due to ownership of property near the launch. All other council members voted in favor of the amended agreement.

The city has maintained the launch since entering into agreements with ALDOT and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) in 1999.

Visitors and locals alike have been using the launch ever since it was created.
