SPANISH FORT, Ala. An overnight head-on collision on the Bayway Friday morning, injured several people and shut down part of Interstate 10 for hours.
Spanish Fort police and fire departments along with EMS were dispatched to the interstate after 911 received a call that a wrong way driver had collided with another vehicle.
According to Spanish fort Police Chief John Barber, the department received a call around 4:42 a.m. of a vehicle driving in the wrong direction on the Bayway.
The first car was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. Before police could get to the car, it allegedly struck a car traveling westbound head-on.
Before the roadway could be closed, Barber said other wrecks were reported in the westbound lanes that police say were probably the result of congestion caused by the initial crash.
A medical helicopter was also initially dispatched to the scene.
Both drivers were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Additionally, a crash was reported near the Wallace Tunnel just before the Bayway crash that could have involved the same wrong-way driver according to law enforcement.
ALEA troopers are currently investigating this traffic collision.
