MOBILE, AL. An area woman who prepared taxes for many people, is heading to prison after previously pleading guilty in October to aiding or assisting in the preparation of false returns.
Aylesha Maria Allen, 42, pleaded guilty in October to aiding or assisting in the preparation of false returns. She admitted that she operated two tax preparation businesses in Mobile since at least 2018.
Prosecutors said that according to her written plea agreement, she filed at least 21 false returns from tax years 2019 through 2023.
She also admitted during court proceedings that she claimed false refunds on the basis of sick and family leave credits related to COVID-19 and false business losses for fuel tax credits.
Although Allen faced many years in federal prison, a judge sentenced her to just one year in prison. When released, Allen will be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office for a year and will have to pay back the $371,412 in fraudulent refunds.
