A fishing charter boat and its passengers got more than they bargained for while out on a recent fishing trip.
Bobby Kelly, owner of Miss Brianna Fishing Charters, says he was the first to spot two whales Sunday morning at around 8 a.m. and he quickly started taking pictures and videos of the whales swimming near the Perdido Pass.
Kelly said that the whales that he spotted were later identified as “right whales” and that after posting some pictures of them he was contacted by
Marine scientists and biologists immediately reached out to him, including FWC Biologist Tom Pitchford who said that the whales were last sighted off of Fort Lauderdale. In his jurisdiction, they were last seen in Saint Augustine, and in Juno Beach and Fort Lauderdale.
The biologist said that these whales, whose names are Kurlew’ and ‘Koala’. were 40-45 feet long and 12 to 18 feet wide and that had been tracking them for some time.
According to NOAA, there are only about 370 of these species left in the world.
