Mobile County, AL – On July 27, 2025, Mobile County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report that a 13-year-old male juvenile had sustained a gunshot wound.

Through the course of the investigation, it was revealed that the juvenile was handling a firearm in a living room when it was discharged, striking him in the left thigh.
Due to the severity of the injury, the juvenile was transferred to a local hospital for immediate treatment.

Investigators identified the firearms involved as belonging to Demetrie Harriott, who was visiting the residence at the time.
The investigation also uncovered that one of the weapons, a 9mm pistol, had been reported stolen to the Mobile Police Department in June 2025. A second revolver was also recovered. Harriott admitted to owning both firearms and stated that he secured them in a bedroom after the incident, where they were subsequently collected by authorities.

Harriott was arrested for receiving stolen property in the second degree and was transported to the Mobile County Metro Jail.

Investigators secured both firearms as evidence and are continuing to investigate to determine if any additional charges are applicable.

This incident highlights the dangers of stolen and unsecured firearms, as approximately 200,000 firearms are stolen annually in the U.S., and 83% of unintentional firearm deaths among children aged 0–17 involve boys, often due to access to loaded, unlocked guns.
