In an area of Fairhope that many locals refer to as the “Triangle” a new traffic roundabout is being built in hopes that it will make that area safer for the many people who traverse that area daily.
The “Triangle” is at the corner where the Fairhope sign and an almost year-round beautiful array of flowers meets Section Street, Scenic 98, Triangle Drive and Veterans Drive.
It’d become a very busy, and sometimes dangerous area to navigate during peak traffic hours and when there are special events in downtown Fairhope.
“It’s an awkward intersection,” Fairhope’s Mayor Sherry Sullivan said. “We have had several accidents here and some people just come through here, don’t really know how to maneuver it.”
The intersection can be confusing to some who do not know the area well since there are only two stop signs and people aren’t also sure who has the right of way.
“I think it’s going to be great for the people who navigate it every day and hopefully cut down on those accidents and just make it easier to get through,” Sullivan said.
But the project and is going to take almost a year and has a price tag of $1.5 million dollars said the mayor but in the end it’ll be safer for everyone.
The Eastern Shore Metropolitan Organization partnered with the city entering an 80/20 match which means that the Eastern Shore MPO is picking up 80% of the bill and the city is left paying about $300,000 for the construction project.
“All these traffic improvements are things that we’re doing are for the betterment of Fairhope and hopefully will see us into the future,” Sullivan said.
