MOBILE Ala. Multiple people have been shot in downtown Mobile at around 11 p.m., Sunday night a short time after more than 100,000 people had flooded downtown to enjoy a Mardi Gras parade and the celebrations.
Mobile police, Mobile Fire-Rescue and EMS responded to the area of Dauphin Street and Joachim Street as many calls came into 911 reporting people being shot.
Mobile Police Chief William Jackson said that at least one person remains in critical condition.
We don’t know the reason for the shooting or what the altercation was in reference to. We do have one that is deceased at another scene, and one that we know is critical. That’s about as much we know right now at this point.” said the police chief.
Police were actively investigating two scenes: one at the corner of Dauphin and Joachim streets, and another in a parking lot one block away.
Jackson said it’s difficult to determine the exact number of victims because some people went to the hospital on their own following the shooting.
Jackson emphasized the shooting was not related to the festivities.
“This had nothing to do with Mardi Gras, but this was probably Mardi Gras crowd spill over,” Jackson said. “But we had probably between 45 and 55 officers here, on foot and on horseback. We had teams right in the attack area where it happened, when it happened. So, it was flooded with law enforcement.”
Police have detained one person of interest in connection with the shooting, though Jackson said the individual has not been named as a suspect.
The police chief said that they are still interviewing people, collecting evidence and it remains unknown how many shots were fired or if there were multiple shooters. The investigation is ongoing.
