MOBILE Ala. An unusual scene in Mobile had residents, police, and animal control staff baffled.
More than a dozen pelicans were found dead scattered on lawns and roadways on West Stuart Drive off Navco Road Saturday.
One report from a neighbor said there were at least sixteen deceased birds in the neighborhood.
Mobile police said that they have responded to reports of more than a dozen pelican corpses found by residents in one Mobile neighborhood.
Mobile Police were called to the area by residents, some thought that they had been shot or attacked by other animals, but a police spokesperson said that city animal control have determined that a lightning strike caused the birds to fall from nearby trees.
Police said that there had been several brief lightning and thunderstorms in the area during the time the pelicans are believed to have died.
Authorities said that the carcasses of the birds will be picked up by city workers no later than Monday.
