Mobile River Bridge Project Currently Testing Foundation Capacity

MOBILE, Ala. The Alabama Department of Transportation, or ALDOT, has issued a press release on another step underway to build the new Mobile River Bridge Project.
It involves testing to confirm the foundation capacity of new bridge pylons.

Testing at two Mobile sites will confirm foundation capacity for new bridge pylons
Steel pile load testing is underway in Mobile as part of the pre-construction process for the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project. The testing will confirm foundation resistance and capacity for the 72-inch steel pipe piles that will support the new bridge’s main pylons.
The work is being performed by Kiewit Massman Traylor (KMT), the project’s design-build contractor. The Steel Pile Load Test Program is a critical part of the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project’s design phase and will help guide final engineering before construction begins. It is one of several steps to ensure the long-term strength and safety of the bridge.
Preparatory work began in mid-June. Steel pile installation and testing are now active and are expected to continue through August. Work is scheduled Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Time and duration will vary at each site.
At each site, crews are leveling the ground, mobilizing equipment and materials, and conducting load tests. Traffic impacts are expected to be minimal.
Test pile installation is happening at the following locations:
West Pylon – Near the intersection of Eslava Street and Old Water Street
East Pylon – Near Dunlap Drive, west of the Austal facility
