SPANISH FORT, Ala. Construction on the new Mobile River and Bayway Bridge has officially kicked off and drivers will soon see increased activity in the area between Spanish Fort and Mobile.
Traffic delays may not be immediately noticed but as previously announced, this project is going to take upwards of five years to complete and that means we’ll all need a lot of patience if driving across the current bridge or when driving along the causeway.
ALDO has not said if construction would be continuously 24-7 or if work will only be done during daytime hours but either way, traffic woes, wrecks and delays are expected.
For years, many people driving through the tunnel have been frustrated and faced dangers from potential car wrecks and vehicle fires.
Jack Burrell, chairman of the Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organization, said the benefits of this multi-billion-dollar project could stretch across Baldwin County.
“It’s going to have such a regional impact. You know, it’s going to drive this economy,” Burrell said. “People that commute back and forth to work, it’s going to make their lives easier. It’s going to make it easier for people to make it to our beaches of South Baldwin County to spend money.”
Besides moving locals from point A to point B, the project, once completed will make the trip easier for tourists and locals alike.
Each year during spring breaks and the summer tourist season, traffic is often back up for miles along current bridge.
The new bridge will separate commercial vehicles from passenger cars and hopefully reduced congestion.
It will cost you to drive across the new bridge. There will be a toll, which will cost drivers $3 per trip and there is a $60 monthly option available. That will stay in effect until the bridge is paid off.
