Mobile Police Respond to Apartment Standoff

MOBILE, AL. Police were dispatched to an apartment complex in Mobile Monday after neighbors reported a disturbance.

More officers responded to Maison DeVille Apartments off Berwyn Drive after someone inside one of the buildings called 911 to report a man was having a mental episode and was armed with a gun. Investigators said two people were being held against their will.

Police tried to talk to the man inside, but he refused to cooperate and that’s when a police negotiator was called to the scene.

Police said that a male subject was refusing to let his son leave the residence and that he was armed with a gun. 

Police talked to the man for several hours and eventually SWAT was also called to the scene and members stood by in case they needed to breach the door.

 Eventually, a man was taken into custody after he surrendered peacefully, according to police.

Police said one person inside the apartment was treated for a medical issue, but no one appeared to be seriously injured.

The apartment complex has had its share of issues including shootings and other violent crimes.

Police identified the person with the firearm as Dwayne Hawkins, 45, and he was arrested and transported to Metro Jail.

Hawkins has been charged with Unlawful Imprisonment.
