MOBILE, Ala. A man who had been found guilty of abuse and assault of a toddler has been sentenced to prison.
Christopher Tywon Beard, 33, of Mobile, admitted to striking the toddler and slamming him on a bed, will go to prison for 18 months, a judge ruled Monday.
Beard, 33, pleaded guilty in September to aggravated abuse of a child younger than 6.
Beard could have faced a sentence of 10 years to life in prison if prosecutors could have demonstrated that Beard had committed abuse on more than on occasion but neither the police nor prosecutors were able to verify that during their investigation.
According to testimony at a preliminary hearing, the defendant shouted at the boy to “shut up” when he would not stop crying. A detective assigned to the Child Advocacy Center in Mobile County testified that the video appears to show Beard striking the child’s feet, slapping him across the face and slamming him several times on the bed.
The child suffered bruising and spent two days at the hospital for a possible concussion.
Kadedra Stewart, the mother of victim was dating Beard at the time of the assault.
A home surveillance camera installed by the child’s mother captured the disturbing incident.
“It’s pretty horrific, and children are our treasure,” Mobile County Circuit Judge Ben Brooks said.
The judge imposed a 10-year split sentence, with all but 18 months suspended and three years of probation. If he violates probation, he could be sent back to prison for all or part of the remaining sentence.
Stewart said she is satisfied with the punishment.
