Mobile County Corrections Officer Dies in I-65 Wreck

MOBILE, Ala. An off-duty Mobile County Sheriff’s Office employee was killed in a weekend crash on Interstate 65 when her car was rear-ended, according to law enforcement.
Corrections Officer Chelice Burns, 64, was struck by a vehicle while driving on Intersttate 65 sending both vehicles off the roadway. The Challenger was traveling 70 miles per hour when he hit Burns, who was going 20 miles per hour, according to the report.
The Dodge Challenger then caught fire.
According to police, the driver of that vehicle misjudged his stopping distance.
Burns was a corrections corporal who had served with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years since 2010.
A passenger in Burns’ car was injured and taken to the hospital. The driver who hit Burns and a 9-year-old passenger in his vehicle was also hospitalized.
The crash brought northbound traffic on I-65 to a standstill for hours.
ALEA troopers are continuing to investigate this fatal collision.
