GULF SHORES, Ala. An overnight fire at a sports business in Gulf Shores may have been sparked by a lithium battery.
Police officers on patrol early Tuesday morning spotted flames coming from the Coyote Beach Sports close to the beach and notified their dispatcher to have the Gulf Shores Fire Department respond.
Police Chief Dan Netemeyer just before three o’clock Tuesday morning, that Gulf Shores Police Officer was on patrol and smelled smoke in the air, investigated where that smoke was coming from, and found fire underneath the building, and it was getting bigger.
Owner Terry Shelton was asleep inside a beach house when he heard a noise and saw police chasing someone, so he thought until he opened the door.
Police and Shelton tried putting the fire out, but they were unsuccessful, said the police chief.
“Right as they cleared away from the building, three, five-gallon gas cans ignited and engulfed the entire building from underneath,” said Chief Netemeyer.
The fire department arrived quickly but the building was engulfed and destroyed in the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. More than likely the fire marshal will release a preliminary report within a week, but Chief Netemeyer is leaning toward a lithium battery as the cause of the fire.
