GULF SHORES, Ala. Another park is being added to the growing list of parks and nature trails in Gulf Shores.
The 53-acre conservation and recreation project is already under construction at the end of West Beach Boulevard along the Little Lagoon.
Officials said the contractor has mobilized and crews have started early site work for the new Laguna Cove Nature Park.
Base material for the driveway has been placed, and work has begun installing pilings for planned boardwalks.
The park is expected to include wetlands and habitat restoration, public restrooms, low-impact parking, and access for activities such as kayaking, birding and interpretive boardwalk walks.
The park will be inside the city but feel like you’re in the country.
City leaders said the land acquisition preserves a natural area and protects it from future development. The project is fully funded through a Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) grant from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, which also funded the land purchase in 2017.
Construction is being completed by Asphalt Services under a $2.6 million bid, with design services provided by Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood, the city said.
