Columbiana Police Officer Shot During Welfare Check

COLUMBIANA, Ala. What started as a welfare check at a residence in Shelby County left a Columbiana police wounded by gunfire and the suspect in jail facing numerous felony charges.
A police officer went to an apartment building on Highway 25 at County Road 47, known as Chelsea Road to check on a male subject.
During the contact with the male pulled a firearm and shot the officer who returned fire and the suspect fled into an apartment.
Multiple Shelby County law enforcement agencies responded and surrounded the Columbiana Villas.
According to the sheriff’s office, the standoff ended shortly before 4:30 p.m. after the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deployed gas into the apartment.
The suspect was not injured and is in custody.
“Thankful for our officer’s safety and all other local agencies that assisted during this situation,” said Mayor Lisa Davis. “Extremely grateful that this was resolved safely and the scene is now secure.”
The injured officer was taken to the hospital and has been released. The suspect has not been identified
