DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. For years, residents have enjoyed the cute little foxes roaming around the beaches and throughout the beach community. But other residents say that they pose a threat because they carry rabies, and they’ve been known to attack other wildlife and pets, and could potentially attack children playing in their yard.
After several years of debates and research, the Town of Dauphin Island has voted to move forward with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, which is part of the Department of Agriculture, to prevent invasive animals like foxes from destroying protected wildlife.
Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier said they want to be proactive in keeping other species safe. This means conducting operations to capture or kill the nuisance animals.
According to city leaders, numerous state, federal, and private entities have conducted research to determine what steps should be taken to protect the foxes and other native wildlife.
“Alabama Audubon, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and other agencies have spent probably the last several years collecting a lot of data and doing a lot of research in that area, and also trying different tactics and techniques,” Collier said. “They’ve also put fencing around active turtle and bird nests to try to defend against predators, and unfortunately, those tactics did not work very well, and it’s been going on for several years now and again the ultimate goal is to get to a point where turtles and in birds can both nest and be more successful, going forward and raising their hatchlings.” For the past few years, Dauphin Island has been partnering with Mobile County, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and other agencies to create the west end bird conservation and development plan. The goal is to turn the west end of the beach into a bird sanctuary.
At this time, efforts will begin on the west side of the island, said Mayor Collier because they are threatening sea turtles and birds.
Collier said they’re focusing on foxes at the west end because they threaten sea turtles and birds, but he tells me they’re not the only animals wildlife groups fear could harm these protected species.
“It’s not just wild animals involved here, but dogs are also prohibited in that area because what the experts will tell you is the mere fact that if a dog or other animals are close to a nest, the smell is there and it disturbs the nest,” he said.
Some locals on the island are voicing their thoughts on this decision. One person even drove around with a sign saying, “stop the kill.”

GAUTIER MS A Mississippi man found guilty of child sex crimes has received a prison sentence of eighty years.
26-year-old David Pace was sentenced by a judge to serve 45 years in prison and in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with the remainder on post-release supervision.
Pace was charged with was sentenced for two counts of exploitation of a child and one count of felony child endangerment.
According to authorities, the case began in May 2023, when a Texas investigator on an internet crime against children task force befriended Pace in a chatroom.
Officials said Pace shared images of young children, including one in Jackson County, being sexually abused.
Since Pace lived in Gautier, the Gautier Police Department was contacted, and a local investigation began.
Officers then searched Pace’s phones and found multiple images and videos of child sexual abuse.
“Our office is steadfast in holding anyone who harms children accountable. No one who harms a child should ever doubt that we will pursue justice with every resource available,” said District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath. “Protecting the most vulnerable is not only our duty, it is our unwavering commitment.”
The 45 years will be served day-for-day, without the possibility of early release or parole.

SEMMES, AL. Two men from Semmes have been indicted for manslaughter charges relating to separate fentanyl overdoses according to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office.
19-year-old Kaleb Daniel Harden and 20-year-old Brayden Robert Hollie were indicted, each on one count of manslaughter.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Harden was arrested in September of 2024 after deputies found a 17-year-old on Howells Ferry Road dead from a fentanyl overdose and Hollie was arrested a month later, in October, in connection with 18-year-old Jayce Ward’s overdose death. Police said that Ward was found at a home on Vickets Road.
Hollie was out on bond earlier this year when he was arrested in April 2025 on charges of third-degree domestic violence, use/possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and second-degree possession of marijuana.
“These are not just numbers or statistics,” read a DA’s office Facebook post. “These are lives lost, families broken, and communities forever changed.
“This past Sunday marked Fentanyl Awareness Day, a solemn reminder of how dangerous and deadly this drug truly is.”

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (WHNT) It’s official. Redstone Arsenal will be home to U.S. Space Command, President Donald Trump announced.
The president made the announcement on September 2.
Redstone Arsenal had long been considered as an option for the permanent headquarters of the command, which has been operating at its provisional headquarters at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado, while the Air Force continued to review a potential move. The command was established August 2019, the Space Command website states.
U.S. Space Command is one of the 11 unified combatant commands within the Department of Defense. The command employs joint forces from the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Space Force and “is responsible for delivering space capabilities to joint and combined forces and protecting and defending the space domain.”
The Rocket City was named a finalist for USSPACECOM in November 2020 when Trump was in his first presidential term.
In January 2021, the Secretary of the Air Force, on behalf of the Office of Secretary of Defense, named Redstone Arsenal as the preferred permanent location for the headquarters, and the Department of Defense later found that the evaluation process had been done reasonably.
Then in 2023, former President Joe Biden decided to keep Space Command in Colorado Springs, where it had been temporarily based pending a final decision. Officials said Biden was convinced by then Space Command Head General James Dickinson, who argued the move would negatively affect military readiness, a view in contrast to Air Force leadership at the time.
Biden’s decision led to calls for investigations into it from Alabama lawmakers, including Congressmen Mike Rogers and Dale Strong and Senators Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt.
A report from the DOD Office of the Inspector General, reviewing the 2023 decision, was released on April 15. It stated that, in multiple reviews, Redstone Arsenal was consistently found to be the preferred choice for a permanent headquarters for Space Command. The report estimated that construction and full technology conversion to prepare for Space Command at Redstone Arsenal could take 3 to 4 years.
The report also found that moving the headquarters from Colorado Springs to Huntsville could save $426 million, primarily due to lower costs for construction and personnel. However, in the summer of 2023, Colorado Springs was selected as the permanent home for Space Command’s headquarters.
Over the last several months, members of Alabama’s congressional delegation have said the announcement was coming soon, with Sen. Tuberville telling the press on July 24 that he had conversations with the President and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth that week regarding Space Command coming to Huntsville.
“They are ready,” Tuberville said. “We are ready to seal the deal once and for all.”
Tuberville said the state has coordinated with leadership in Madison County, putting adequate plans in place to host Space Command.
“We’ve got to do it the right way,” Tuberville said. “We don’t want something to fall through that’s not carried through the proper stages, and when it’s done, we want it to be done. We don’t need any more reviews, anything like that.”
Strong also described conversations he had recently with Trump about Redstone Arsenal’s ability to house the command.
“The President has made promises related to doing what’s right for national security,” Strong said. “Every evaluation points to Redstone Arsenal. We have no time to waste. It’s time to go vertical, and I feel that a decision is imminent.”
Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville has been home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center since 1960 and has also been home to the Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command since 1957, when the Army created the first program office for ballistic missile defense.
After World War II, the Army installation became the heart of the Army’s rocket and missile programs.
Because Redstone Arsenal has such diversity, it is known as a Federal Center of Excellence. Redstone Garrison Public Affairs released a fact sheet for the installation. Some of the installation’s larger organizations are listed below.
U.S. Army Materiel Command – one of four Army Commands
U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command

Below is a list of the warfighting units used in Space Command, per its website:
A spokesperson for the White House said the transition is expected to bring Alabama 30,000 new jobs. You can read that statement below.
“The Air Force’s merit-based decision to relocate SPACECOM to Huntsville is a win for national security and displays President Trump’s commitment to securing the United States’ global dominance. SPACECOM’s new headquarters at Redstone Arsenal puts them in the best situation to improve readiness and protect our national interests while providing the necessary infrastructure capacity, community support, cost effectiveness, and proximity to a skilled workforce, leading space companies, and major research institutions. While the nation benefits from a strong SPACECOM presence, Alabama can also expect 30,000 new jobs, housing demand, and additional local business development.”

RABUN, Ala. Calls to 911 reported that there was a vehicle on fire northbound on Interstate 65, between mile-markers 40 and 41 and the Baldwin County Communications Center dispatched the Rabun Volunteer Fire Department to the scene.
However, moments later, at around 8:47 a.m., several more callers to 911 reported that the vehicle was a commercial, 18-wheeler that was on fire. As firefighters arrived on the scene, they quickly observed that the truck was fully involved and that they had a major fire on their hands.
The Stockton Volunteer Fire Department and a fire engine from Bay Minette were dispatched, along with EMS and state troopers.
Traffic began to back up as Interstate-65 was temporarily shut down so that firefighters could extinguish the fire.
It took firefighters approximately two hours to extinguish the fire and troopers opened the roadway back up.

STARKE, FL The State of Florida has scheduled the 13th execution of the year.
A man who was convicted 0f fatally stabbing a married couple during a robbery is scheduled to be executed this month, which could extend the state’s record number of inmates put to death in one single year.
A death warrant has been signed 29th by Governor Ron DeSantis, and the execution is scheduled for 64-year-old Victor Tony Jones on September 30th at Florida State Prison.
Jones was convicted in 1993 on two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. He was also found guilty of two counts of armed robbery. At the time of the murders, he was a new employee at a Miami-Dade business owned by Matilda and Jacob Nestor in December 1990 when he stabbed the woman in the neck and the man in the chest.
Before he died from his wounds, Jacob Nester was able to make it to an office, pull a .22 caliber pistol from a holster and fire five times, hitting Jones once in the forehead. Jones was found wounded with the Nestors’ money and personal belongings in his pockets.
This would mark the state’s 13th execution scheduled for this year. The state’s 11th execution was carried out on Thursday, August 28th, when 59-year-old Curtis Windom died by lethal injection. David Pittman, 63, is the state’s 12th execution, which is scheduled for September 17th. Florida has executed more people this year than any other state, with Texas and South Carolina tied for the second-most with four each. Prior to this year, Florida’s previous record for executions in a year since the death penalty was restored in 1976 was eight in 2014.
Across the country, 30 people have been executed so far this year, surpassing the 25 executions carried out in 2024. The last time there were more executions in a year for an entire country was 2014, when 35 people were put to death.
The Florida Supreme Court will hear an appeal as Jones’ lawyers seek to block his execution. His legal team is also expected to file an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court.

Officials said the horse is safe.

“Just another day in the life of a Fire Battalion Chief/Cowboy,” it said.

AUBURN, Ala. Authorities are investigating several incidents where students were drugged on and off campus in recent days.

Auburn University Campus Safety and Security alerted the community on Friday about the reports that students had been drugged recently.
Police and Campus Safety and Security Officers offered tips for those who are experiencing symptoms. They advised seeking medical care immediately. Officers also stated that urinalysis can be conducted to determine if a date rape drug was given, so they suggest holding urination until a test can be performed.
Possible victims should inform the medical provider that they may have been drugged and ask for a date rape drug test.
At this time the investigation is continuing, but no arrests have been made.
Officials suggest students watch their drinks.
Giving someone a drug without their permission is considered aggravated assault and is a felony.

DAPHNE Ala. Despite a large crowd attending Thursday night’s Daphne Planning Commission who was not in favor of a new three-story building being built in Old Towne, the project was approved.
The plan includes a restaurant and an office building. A restaurant and retail space is planned on the first floor, and offices will be on the second and third floor.
The lot sits at the corner of Van Avenue and busy Main Street, right across the street from Daniel Johnson’s media business, and home where he, his wife, and seven children live, and Johnson is not happy that the business got the green light to build. That site doesn’t allow enough parking, he says.
John Tillman, his wife, and five kids live in a house on Van Avenue in Olde Towne Daphne, the same house his parents and his grandmother lived in. He is also not happy with how the city approved his new neighbor to be.
At issue is parking and traffic concerns. The city ordinance for parking is determined by frontage on the road, and residents say that the ordinance was never intended for the area to have a three-story office building in Old Towne.
The developer, also a resident of Daphne, assured those present that he’ll do nothing to harm the fabric of Olde Towne Daphne.

GULF SHORES, Ala. College towns are known for partying, celebrating, and rowdiness, but a new survey shows that they’re also known for some serious crimes, and unfortunately, Tuscaloosa, home of the University of Alabama, has made that list.
According to a new list that was compiled by a group of defense lawyers, the city of Tuscaloosa is one of the most dangerous college towns in the U.S.
Wasatch Defense Lawyers published the “2025 Most Dangerous College Towns” list with Tuscaloosa at number two.
“Tuscaloosa, home to the University of Alabama, ranks second with 149 crimes per 10,000 residents. Much of the risk is tied to areas with heavy nightlife activity, where alcohol-related incidents and thefts are more common,” the article states. “The city’s mix of student renters and visiting sports fans can also create conditions for opportunistic crime.”
The list outlines crimes committed in recent years, and the list was compiled considering the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting system and local police department information from May 2023 to May 2025.
Gainesville, Fla., the home of the University of Florida, was ranked number one.

FAIRHOPE, Ala. Once again, the City of Fairhope is on the hunt for more water, even after digging new wells and updating the water system in 2024. The continual influx of new residents and businesses has proven to be quite the challenge for the once small, quaint city on the bluffs.
During 2024, the City of Fairhope took several actions to address water capacity issues, including drilling new irrigation-only wells and completing a major system upgrade. A catastrophic pump failure in August 2024 prompted a water conservation emergency, even with the new upgrades in place.
By June 2024, Fairhope completed a major water system project, including a new well and a larger water main. The upgrades increased the city’s overall water pumping capacity from 9 million to 11 million gallons per day.
But now, just a year later, the city has had to hire O’Donnel and Associates Hydro-geological Services of Mobile to oversee the search for possible sites for new city water wells. The company will search for the right locations to drill new wells, among other things, will be paid $42,000 for the services.
A process is used to determine what area could yield significant water volume and the depth in which the water might be found. Sometimes finding water is easy, while in other areas, it may take numerous attempts at drilling different spots before water is found. Many areas of the country use large freshwater reservoirs or pull water from nearby rivers however, the cities along the Eastern Shores are unable to use the nearby Mobile Bay because it is an estuary, a brackish mixture of freshwater and saltwater that is unsafe for human consumption. The bay is also affected by high levels of pollution and bacteria from industrial and stormwater runoff.
Several possible locations have made the list for exploration, and they include near the existing tank-tower on Nichols Avenue, the Barnwell community on US 98, South Section Street near the water treatment plant, the area on County Road 32 and County Road 13, US State Highway 181 near Highway 104, and in the Dyer Road area.
