An off-duty Birmingham police officer was killed at 5:03 a.m. on Interstate 59 Monday morning while riding a motorcycle.
Officer Marlon Moore, who served four years as a U.S. Marine, joined the department as a recruit in July 2019, and graduated from the Birmingham Police Academy in December 2019, and was assigned to the East Precinct.
Police officials said Moore served the Birmingham community with dedication, integrity, and pride since joining the department.
“His loss is deeply felt across our department and among the citizens he faithfully protected,” according to a statement announcing his death.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Moore’s family, friends, and colleagues during this extremely difficult time,” said Police Chief Michael Pickett. “Officer Moore was a valued member of our BPD family, and his memory will live on through the lives he touched.”
The Birmingham Police Department has made support services available for officers and staff through Peer Support and 1-800-COPLINE.
“We ask the community to keep Officer Moore’s family and the entire Birmingham Police Department in your thoughts and prayers,” the statement read.
