MOBILE, Ala.
A person out on Old Shell Road near the Publix was startled and surprised when they suddenly saw a large black figure heading to a dumpster behind the store.
A black bear made its way behind the store and began rummaging through a dumpster to find it’s next meal.
During this time of year, normally bears in colder areas would already be hibernating but here in the south, they go into what is called “torpor” during the winter — essentially going dormant to conserve energy.
It’s likely this bear hasn’t yet entered that period and is searching for a few more snacks before getting some much-deserved shut-eye.
The bears in our area have not been found to be aggressive unless it’s a momma bear with cubs and are more of a nuisance, getting into birdfeeders and trash now and then for a meal.
